List of

Killed In Action

as recorded by
Private Paul Brown
of
45th Division, 179th Regiment
Grave Regristration Services

Names of 477 men who will not be forgotten.

Paul Brown kept a journal of while serving in the front lines with the 45th Division.  He was a member of the Grave Registration Service.  These G.R.S. soldiers had the difficult task of going out at night and recovering fallen comrades and providing a decent, but possibly temporary burial.  In the front of his journal, he compiled a list of  names of the soldiers that his unit buried.  One of the 4 journals was lost. This page contains the list of about 477 names he recorded in his journal between the dates of Sept 25, 1943 to Jan. 24, 1944.  Many of these soldiers were picked up off the battlefield of Anzio.
The lists were recorded in the front of Paul Brown's journal.  There are a few names that were illegible.  Some erros are obviously typos from the transcriber.  For the most part, the list has proven to be very accurate.  His list even records the soldier's company.  For some names, he would list his friend with a nickname or shortened name.
The 45th Division consisted of many units, the primary ones being the 157th, 179th, and 180th Infantry Regiments as well as 158th, 160th, 171st and 189th Field Artillery Battalions.   Private Brown reports in his journal that at one time the Grave Registration Service(GRS) was assigned to Company K of the 179th Regiment.  The names in this list include soldiers from other divisions and supporting units.
Some of the bodies of the fallen comrades were returned home for burial by their family.  Many of these Americans still lay buried at the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery near Nettuno, Italy.

A tremendous thanks to Paul G. Brown, Jr. for graciously allowing his father's journal to be shared with the public.  His journal is now on loan at the 45th Division Museum in Oklahoma.

Introduction

List of KIA's
Recovered by the 179th Regiment
Sept 25, 1943 - Jan. 24, 1944

Paul Brown was a member of the Grave Registration Service (G.R.S.) Platoon that was assigned to the 179th Infantry Regiment.  In his journal he says that this service unit was assigned to Company K at one time.  Unless otherwise stated, all soldiers served in the 179th Infantry Regiment of the 45th Division.  The list contains names from other units; artillery battalions of the 45th Division, 34th Division, Japanese Americans, tank destroyer battalions and other support units
Paul Brown's journal is a diary of his personal thoughts that were recorded between September 9, 1943, the date of the Salerno Invasion until May 30, 1944.  His comments at the beginning suggests that the list was complied by writing the names of the deceased on slips of paper and then recording that into his journals.  In another place, he states that list is short by 76 names, so I assume that he lost the slips of paper.
The names in the list were recorded basically in chronological order as they were buried.  Some parts of the list seem to be grouped by unit.   It could be possible that some names are grouped this way because history books record how a company lost 30% of its men while attacking a position.  Therefore, when the bodies were retrieved, there would be several recovered from the same unit.  Or, another possiblity is that they soldiers were from random units but just before burial they were grouped together by their unit, at which time their names were recorded in this list.
Additional Info has been added from information from Paul Brown’s diary or from info found on the American Battle Monuments Commission website that lists soldiers whose bodies remain interned in the cemeteries on foriegn soil.  If name was found at ABMC site, then in most cases they were buried in Nettuno, Italy, and the info includes their regiment or unit, home State, date of death and decorations.  Notice that the dates of death found in the ABMC site seems to agree with the dates recorded on Paul Brown's list.

Quote from Pvt. Paul Brown’s Journal

"KIA's picked up by 179th G.R.S. Platoon from Sept 25, 1943 (Salerno Beach head)until Jan. 24, 1944 (Anzio Beach head).  43 names, those of Sicilian campaign are not listed…I lost my book.
List is not complete due to number of Unknowns & lost names on various slips of paper.  All men underlined are men I knew very well."

{Note: I removed the underlines from the names.  Instead, I have cross referenced the names that appear in his daily journal.}

Chronological Order
as recorded in Paul Brown's journal

This first list is in the order as they were recorded in the journal.  The dates of the death and the other details, such as the entries in Paul Brown's diaries, seems to indicate the names were recorded in the order which the soldier's bodies were retrieved and buried.   See List 2.  Therefore, I consider this list as arranged by chronological order.
Column 1 & 2 identifies the List & Number as recorded in the journal.
Column 3 is the Name of the soldier and Column 4 is the Unit ID.
Column 5 is additional comments; details recorded in the Journal and research info.
The Comments may include info found on the ABMC site, which is shown in Purple.  The name or unit listed with the ABMC may be slightly different.  These slight differences could be due to nicknames and unit reassignments.
Unless stated otherwise, these soldiers are buried at Sicily-Rome American Cemetery in Nettuno, Italy.
Info recorded from ABMC will usually include:  Full Name, Rank, Serial Number, Home State, Unit ID, Date of death, and Awards{in brackets}--but does not specify the company within the regiment.
Example of abreviated notes:
179R NY 12/25/43  = soldier was in 179 Regt from New York state and KIA on Dec 25, 1943.
BS = Bronze Star,  PH = Purple Heart,  + = oak leaf for 2nd award of same medal.   (See Note <PH>)
Another source that I used to check this list of KIA's found in "The Story of a Regiment: A History of the 179th Regimental Combat Team by Warren P. Munsell, Jr. (San Angelo, Texas: Newsfoto Publishing Co., 1946).  Text noted in green are additions from this source.
Another source that was cross-checked was a booklet entitled "The 45th Divisional Artillery", which gave the names of those KIA's.  Text noted in maroon are from this source.
If Comments column has "Diary 9/24" this means that this soldier is mentioned in Paul Brown's daily journal for the date indicated.  Info as to the type of wound was recorded by Paul Brown.

List 2
List of KIA's
Recovered by the 179th Regiment
Alphabetical Order by Last Name
This second list is was sorted in alphabetical order by their last name.  If there is any discrepancy between the two lists, it is because I updated one and forgot to update the other.
Column 1 & 2 identifies the List & Number as recorded in the journal.
Column 3 is the Name of the soldier and Column 4 is the Unit ID.
Column 5 is additional comments; details recorded in the Journal and research info.
The Comments column may include info found on the ABMC site, which is shown in Purple.
The info may include:  Full Name, Serial Number, Home State, Unit ID, Date of death, and Awards.
Go to Abbreviations for an explanation of the abbreviations I used and the identification of Units.
If Comments column has "Diary 9/24" this means that this soldier is mentioned in Paul Brown's daily journal for the date indicated.  Info as to the type of wound was recorded by Paul Brown.
